19th March - Another dream comes true for the St. Gabriel Band.
After 40 years (1970), the St Gabriel Band returned to Villa Macedonia in Sisner Street, Hal Balzan with a musical programme.  It was the Villa Macedonia area that the St Gabriel Band did its first appearance on the 23th March 1952.  The Villa Macedonia belonged to the late Noble Count Bernardo Manduca Piscopo Macedonia Zamitt (1891-1971), a philanthropist and benefactor of the St Gabriel Band Club, the Parish Church and the people of Hal Balzan.

Today the Villa Madeconia is the official residence of the Spanish Ambassador.  The Hal Balzan Local Council organized the ‘Garden Days’ (Jiem il-Gonna).  The Spanish Ambassador H.E. Maria Isabel Vicendi Plaza hosted a Musical Concert by the St. Gabriel Band in Villa Macedonia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Tonio Borg, The Spanish Ambassador H.E. Maria Isabel Vicandi Plaza, Mayor of Hal Balzan Dr. John Zammit Montebello and the Local Counselors, President of the St. Gabriel Band Club Mr. Lino Borg and the Central Committee, Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Calcidonio Vassallo and the Clergy, members of the Club and others attended the splendid evening at the Villa Macedonia Gardens.

The activity started by a Holy Mass.  The Holy Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. C. Vassallo, the Parish Priest.  The Marija Anninzjata Choir took part in the Holy Mass.  Then, the Ambassador of Spain, the Mayor of Hal Balzan, Deputy Prime Minister addressed those present for the evening, followed by local Historian Mr Charles Bezzina who delivered a detailed history presentation about the Villa itself.  During his speech, Mr. Bezzina said the connection between the late Noble Count Bernardo Manduca and the St. Gabriel Band Club, and about the history of the Villa, which was designed by architect Giovanni Sacco in 1934.

Then it was time to the St Gabriel Band.  A variety of music was played…from Spanish music such as the Spanish Gypsy Dance to local music such as Mnarja of late Mro. Carmelo Pace, Hootananny of Harold L. Walters to Traviata Brindsy of Giuseppe Verdi.  The Band was under the direction of Mro. Joseph Vella.  The evening ended with the Spanish and Maltese National Anthems.  The Club’s President presented a gift to the Spanish Ambassador for hosting this great evening at Villa Macedonia.

28th September - Celebrations for the occasion of the Feast of St. Gabriel 2009...
On the occasion of the feast of Angel St Gabriel, the St. Gabriel Band Club organized a Karaoke Night on Friday 25th September 2009.  It was a great evening and a large crowd attended this activity in the club’s yard. Then, Saturday 26th September 2009, the traditional dinner was held.  This year a Majjalata (Suckling Pig) was the order of the night..  The club’s yard was fully packed.  Well done for the organizers.  Yes…a 5 star meal!! Sunday 27th September 2009, an Open Day was on.  Members and guests had the opportunity to visit the newly build premises.  In the mean time, a motorcycle show was on display.  Thank you for all the participants. These initiatives show the continuous work of this Society.  The attendances stimulate us to work more with the same attitude that our ancestors had almost 90 years ago when they formed the Circolo San Gabriel.  Next year, the St Gabriel Band Club commemorates the 90 years of its foundation, 1920 – 2010.

11th, 12th & 13th September - Feast of the Flags.
The Malta Government is organizing the 'Feast of the Flag'.  This is a new national initiative to promote this centuries old Maltese  traditional flags in order to raise flags on the roofs of Band Clubs, Public Buildings, Private residence and more.  A positive reaction came from flag enthusiasts, therefore between 11 and 13th September 2009, the ‘Festa tal-Bnadar’ or the 'Feast of the Flag' will going to take place.  This will be another promotion to our traditions, however every Society or enthusiasts with flag poles are being encouraged to participate in this event.

The St Gabriel Band Club looks forward and invites the Balzan flags enthusiasts to put a flag between the 11th and 13th September 2009.

2nd August - The Huge Bell - 60 Years after...

60 years ago…Sunday 2nd January 1949, the Hal Balzan villagers accomplished a great dream as the huge bell named Maria Ann and manufactured in Nancy France by Paccard Company was placed in the elegant and unique belfry (tower) by our ancestors namely Mikiel is-Sagristan, Ġuzeppi Sammut, Karmnu Zarb and Mikiel il-Boqboq.  The enthusiasm was huge.  The cost was L1,900, the weight is around 5000kg and the bell is the 3 biggest in our Island.

60 years later, 2nd August 2009, Directors from the Paccard Company visited our Parish Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation.  After they were invited to the St. Gabriel Band Club and welcomed by President Mr. Lino Borg and his Committee.  After, they signed the visitors’ book.

A breath of satisfaction on every supporter was evident at the end of the last tunes by the Stella Maris Band of Sliema.  This was due to the great and well organized feast dedicated to Our Lady of Annunciation.

Yes…another EXCELLENT FEAST!  The internal celebrations held in the Parish Church were dominated by the Family Nani music.  Well done goes to the Marija Annunzjata Choir headed by Mr. Lawrence Scicluna, Parish Priest Rev. Fr. C. Vassallo and finally to Sacristan Valent Chetcuti and his team for their dedication in decorating the Parish Church.  One has to notice that lots of feast enthusiasts visited our feast to see our marvelous decorated church.

The external celebrations complemented the internal celebrations.  The St. Gabriel Band started the feast when the statue of the Annunciation came out of the niche.  Thursday 9th July, the St. Gabriel Band under the direction of Bandmaster Mro. J. Vella had the Annual Musical Program.  What a success!  The talents of popular Gorg ‘il-Puse’ Curmi and duo Georgina and Ryan marked a five star musical program.  And what about the Thunder n Lightning of Johann Straus II…the Band was synchronized to fireworks.

The much awaited Friday’s band march was on.  Just after midnight, the statue of Angel Gabriel was put on the 7m high platform.  The Youths’ Committee inaugurated the next year 90th Anniversary logo…The Glory of the Past,  Guarantee for the Future.

On Saturday, the St. Helen Band of B’Kara had a musical service in the upper part of the village.  Then it was time for ground fireworks.  A great show!  Then it was Sunday.  The Kings’ Own Band of Valletta welcomed the statue of the Annunciation with the Ave Maria hymns.  Then it was a spectacular scene as fireworks were on, colourful poppers while balloons were up in sky.  An innovation for this year was that popular singer Renato sang the Ave Maria when the statue was next to the St. Mary Chapel.  As the procession was coming to the end, local poet Gorg Borg read some poetry lines, while tenor Elia Cassar sang the Ave Maria.  Fireworks were lit as the statue was back in church.

Another five star feast for the village of Hal Balzan.  Thanks to everyone!
