Until
April 1920, there was only one society in Balzan. Three
youths Giuseppe Muscat, Giuseppe Falzon and Salvatore Attard visited the
Parish Priest Fr Annibale Sisner, and on the 20th April 1920
he rented them the house in No. 5,
St Mary Street, Balzan so that they could form a new Society.
They wanted to name the club "San Valentino" for the second
patron saint in Balzan. Sisner, being a very diplomatic person and
looking ahead, to avoid that in the future there will be two primary
feasts he suggested that the club should be named after the Archangel
Gabriel, so that both clubs will work for one primary feast. The youths
accepted and by this move rivalry between the two clubs was eliminated
till this day. Therefore
the official date for the founding of the Club should date should be 19th
April 1920.The minutes of that historical meeting if they ever where
written have never been found, but in the book "L-Introito e Esito"
in those days, we see that the "Circolo San Gabriel" began
with twenty members who each gave (12c 5m) for the rent. Here we should
note that the rent was of £2
every 6 months. From the minutes one reads that Pearson was the first
president. Its interesting to note that in the financial
records of the 13th November 1920, we see that an income of 5s (25c) for the ‘rent of a room for the Football Club’
this showing that the football club already existed in Balzan in those
days. The aim of the Circolo as it was known till 1944 was to help in the external feasts which were held in Balzan in honour of The Annunciation. The proof lies in the pedestal which depicts Judith, money was collected after five years that the Circolo was founded for the new pedestal as we know it today. Apart from this the club used to organise social, religious and cultural activities for its members. St.

The building we know today was bought by the initiative of
Gabriel Caruana and was opened on the 1st September 1957. |
