The
need for musical activity was always felt in Balzan. For a short period
of time a small orchestra was formed, this is confirmed by the article
Anton Camilleri wrote about the visit the Governor Charles Boham Carter
made to Balzan in 1936. Mr Camilleri wrote: “The
Governor and his wife went to the St Gabriel Band Club. The President
John Borg and the secretary Valent Cardona where there to greet them,
along with other members. In the club there was a small band that played
the “God save the King” as soon as the Governor stepped in.” One
of the newspapers wrote: “a small local band was playing”. But
this band soon died out, so the need for another band was felt more than
ever. It’s not easy to just form a new band, this task involves a
great deal of work and one encounters many difficulties. A man full of
courage must take this job in hand.
On
the 5th of August 1951 he presented the formal proposal to
the Committee. Along with this proposal he also presented a list of
eleven band players and four students who showed interest in learning an
instrument. The committee decided to call an urgent general meeting for
the approval of this proposal.
With
the death of Briffa the committee thought of a new band master, he was
Mr Clemente Schibberas A. Mus. L.C.M who took his position in May of
1972. On
the 16th January 1991, the band went into the hands of Mro
Joseph Vella A. Mus. L. C. M. L.Mus. L.C.M V.V.C.M. During the last fifty one years the band has done many honours to the village of Balzan. During these years the Band has accompanied various activities some sad and some joyous. We cannot forget the people who are no longer with us, who have worked and sacrificed to make this band a successful one. |
